The Orion Publishing Group was founded in 1991, and the following year acquired Weidenfeld & Nicolson (including J.M. Dent and Everyman Paperbacks).  The first books under the Orion name were published in 1992; authors on the inaugural list included Maeve Binchy and Ian Rankin.  In 1998 the group was acquired by Hachette Livre, and later the same year acquired Gollancz as part of Hachette’s acquisition of Cassell and Co.

The group’s imprints now comprise Orion Books (commercial fiction and non-fiction), Weidenfeld & Nicolson (literary fiction, quality non-fiction and illustrated books, with paperbacks appearing under the Phoenix imprint), Swordfish (distinctive narrative non-fiction),  Orion Children’s Books, Indigo (Young Adult) and Gollancz (now its dedicated science fiction and fantasy imprint).
