David Nicholls’ One Day is Galaxy Book of the Year15/12/2010
The prestigious accolade was voted for by the public from a shortlist of the eight category winners from the Galaxy National Book Awards 2010 – an impressive literary set that comprised Stephen Fry, Hilary Mantel, Jonathan Franzen and Andrew Marr, amongst others.
On receiving the award, David Nicholls said: “I'm both surprised and delighted by the award and would like to thank everyone who took the trouble to vote. It's a great pleasure to discover that the story of Dex and Em has struck such a chord - word of mouth is the best review a writer can possibly hope for, and my thanks to everyone who has read and talked about One Day.”
David Nicholls’ One Day was named Popular Fiction Book of the Year at the star-studded Galaxy National Book Awards ceremony, produced by Cactus for More4 at London’s prestigious BBC Studios earlier this month, ahead of an acclaimed line up of nominees which included Jilly Cooper, Dorothy Koomson and Philippa Gregory, all in attendance.
Jamie Hodder-Williams, CEO, Hodder & Headline, said: “Everyone at Hodder fell in love with Emma and Dexter when they first appeared in our lives. That enthusiasm is fairly common within a publishing office. But rarely has a book been so embraced and recommended by other publishers, by independents, chain booksellers, media and readers alike. It is wonderful that the huge warmth the whole industry has shown this extraordinary book has been rewarded with the Galaxy Book of the Year – it couldn’t go to a more deserving author.”
Viewers of More4’s “Booked,” the five-part weekly TV series which ran on Sunday nights from 14th November to 12th December and featured interviews with the winners, were encouraged by host Claudia Winkleman to go to the C4 website and vote for their favourite book. “Booked” reached well over half a million viewers in total.
Amanda Ross said: “I’m not surprised David’s amazing book won the vote, I loved it and it was probably one of the best books I read last year. The only reason I didn’t pick it as a TV Book Club choice is that David was one of my first ever picks with his novel ‘Starter for Ten’, and the Book Club always introduces different authors to our audience.”
