World Book Day10/03/2009

World Book Day - the annual promotion of books and reading by a partnership of publishers, booksellers and organisations took place on 5th March this year. World Book Day is the biggest annual celebration of books and reading in the UK and Ireland and is also marked in over 100 countries around the world.

One of its principal aims is to encourage children's enjoyment of reading and exploration of books and, to that end, National Book Tokens provided 14 million World Book Day £1 Book Tokens to be exchanged for one of the six specially published World Book Day £1 Books.

As part of this scheme, Orchard Books have joined forces with Egmont Children's Books to produce a flip book containing both Beast Quest: Sephir the Storm Monster by Adam Blade (Orchard Books) with an Egmont Children’s title Mr Gum and the Hound of Lamonic Bibber, which have together gone on to reach number 8 in this week's Sunday Times Childrens' Bestseller list. Hachette UK is a major supporter and one of the principal donors of World Book Day.

World Book Day originated over 80 years ago in Catalonia, where roses and books were traditionally given as gifts on St. George’s Day each year.
